report: Congress fails to restore SBA loan breaks
> (June 4, 2010)
Congress’ failure to extend these loan breaks before leaving town
for its weeklong Memorial Day recess frustrated SBA lenders. “The
one stimulus program that was working well, and they let it
expire,” said Tony Wilkinson, president and CEO of the National
Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders. He fears Congress
won’t get another extension in place until “the first of
July, if ever.” His organization, which represents SBA lenders,
will “keep screaming” until the loan breaks are restored, he
said. The SBA and President Barack Obama also support an extension of
these programs. Without the breaks, Wilkinson expects SBA lending will
slow, even though this is typically the peak season for SBA lenders. The
loss of the 90 percent guarantee “is going to be a big deal”
for many lenders, because their capital won’t go as far with only
a 75 percent guarantee, he said.
