SBA Responds to NY Times Article
A June 12 article in the NY Times (see below) elicited
a major response from the agency. Acting Administrator Jovita Carranza
writes, "Your piece … was stunning in its
omission of hard facts on the agency's transformation—which were
provided to the Times—but also in its omission of letters and
proclamations of support for the agency's turnaround from industry
groups and legislators." The letter, along with supporting evidence is
posted here.
Small Business Problems Linger as Preston Heads to HUD
A NY Times article describes "various problems
that critics and small-business groups say are particularly troublesome
in a weakened economy. They cite the need for greater availability of
loans in particular." More >
Kerry, Snowe Request Investigation of SBA Lender
Oversight
"Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) this week
asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct an
investigation of the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) lender
oversight system. In light of a recent Inspector General’s
report that found "major weaknesses" in the SBA’s lender
oversight, and detailed how the agency’s poor oversight of four
lenders created a loss of $329 million for the SBA’s largest loan
program, the Senators requested that the GAO examine the SBA’s
system for monitoring SBA lenders’ portfolios and identifying
risky lenders. Four years ago the GAO made recommendations for
lender oversight improvement, yet the Administration has failed to enact
appropriate changes." More >
